The Training Process of ChatGPT

The initial training of ChatGPT involved supervised fine-tuning. Human AI trainers played both the role of the user and an AI assistant, providing conversations for training. They had access to model-written suggestions to help compose responses.

To refine the model through reinforcement learning, comparison data consisting of multiple model responses and alternative completions were collected. These data were derived from the conversations between the trainers and the chatbot. The AI trainers ranked the responses based on quality, which formed reward models used for fine-tuning using Proximal Policy Optimization. Several iterations of this process were carried out.

Like its sibling InstructGPT, ChatGPT was trained using reinforcement learning from Human Feedback (RLHF). However, the data collection setup differs slightly. Moreover, supervised training can mislead the model as it relies on what the model knows rather than what a human demonstrator knows.
• Sensitivity to slight phrasing tweaks: ChatGPT’s responses can be inconsistent if the input phrasing is slightly modified or if the same prompt is repeated. In such cases, the model may claim not to know the answer or provide accurate responses.
• Bias issue: Due to biases in the training data and over-optimization, ChatGPT can be excessively verbose and rely on certain phrases. For example, it often restates that it’s a language model trained by OpenAI.
• Lack of clarifying questions: The current model does not ask clarifying questions when faced with ambiguous queries, instead, it takes a guess at the intended meaning. Ideally, it should seek clarification to provide accurate responses.
• Response to inappropriate or harmful requests: While the model generally refuses inappropriate requests, it may still respond to harmful instructions. OpenAI employs the Moderation API to regulate unsafe content, but occasional false negatives and positives can occur. User feedback is crucial for refining and improving the system in these cases.
